Take Time to Read a Book

Over 3,000 years ago, human beings invented the first written words. Ever since then, we’ve been writing on everything from stones to cave walls to paper. That's a lot of writing! Books store up all of humanity's stories and world-changing ideas. When the internet exploded with countless digital products to read, many feared the extinction of physically printed books. Predictions of the end of libraries and bookstores were obviously premature. They not only survived, but thrived as the internet increased access to books in multiple modalities, reviews, and author interviews

Origins of National Read a Book Day

On September 6th book lovers at River North Law Group and beyond celebrate ‘National Read a Book Day.’ While details of its origin are unclear, the observance of National Read a Book Day started growing in popularity through the 2000’s, and has been popularized internationally as a day to celebrate the joys of reading and to encourage everyone to pick up a book and read.

Benefits of Reading a Book

The National Institute on Aging recommends reading books and magazines as a way of keeping your mind engaged as you grow older. A 2020 study in 1,960 older adults in Taiwan found that, after a 14-year follow-up, those who read more were less likely to face cognitive decline. A Chinese study in 2022 found that book reading had a positive effect on the physical and mental health of older individuals. It also provided a social outlet, which had further positive effects.

Reading books may have several health additional benefits, including strengthening your brain, increasing your ability to empathize, reducing stress, and building your vocabulary.

Book Suggestions

So, what should you be reading? The short answer is: Whatever you can get your hands on. Start with a bestseller list. Here are just three of the most popular lists.

If you’re pressed for time, devote a few minutes daily to a book of short stories or even the current Almanac. Even reaching briefly can enrich social acuity and lift the spirit. If you’re looking for an escape, fantasy or historical fiction can transport you out of your own surroundings and into another world altogether.

If possible, don’t read solely on a device. Studies have shown that people who read print books retain slightly more of what they read than those who read the same material digitally. That may be, in part, because people tend to read print more slowly than they read digital content.
