Precautions to Take in Event of an Accident
If you can, move your automobile into the emergency lane and away from active lanes of traffic. Put on your hazard lights to warn other drivers, and call for a tow truck if needed. If you have flares in your trunk and know how to operate them safely, place them near your automobile.
Take written notes of pertinent information from all parties involved, including name, address, phone number(s), license number, vehicle tag number, insurance name and policy number.
Take photos of the cars and any other landmarks or road features involved in the accident.
It's the law. If damage caused by the accident exceeds $1,500 or if someone is hurt you must file an accident report at the police department nearest to the accident. This report is a helpful reference in claims processing.
